June 14th 2024: Backyard Chicken medicine and surgery: lectures and practical sessions


This day course will cover veterinary care of backyard flocks of chickens, including husbandry,  diagnostics, common medical conditions and surgical treatments

What's included

The day will be divided into lectures covering the more common clinical scenarios.

The morning will focus on care of non-commerical flocks, preventative care, basic supportive measures and common medical problems.

This will include a walk round of on site chicken housing with a critical review of management options.

The afternoon will then look at diagnostics, including how to perform basic faecal parasitology.

There will be also practical sessions for handling, examination, sample collection, medication administration and basic post mortem examination for flock diagnostics. Attendants should dress appropriately for working outside!

This day will discuss how to handle, diagnose and treat the most common issues affecting pet parrots and birds of prey, with a bias towards the more common species seen in general practice.
